वेद भारतीय संस्कृति की आत्मा हैं। ये मानव जाति के लिए प्रकाश-स्तंभ हैं। विश्व को संस्कृति का ज्ञान देने का श्रेय वेदों को है। वेद ही विश्व-शांति ,विश्व-बंधुत्व और विश्व-कल्याण के प्रथम उद्घोषक हैं। वेदों की ज्योति ने ही आर्यजाति की समुन्नति का मार्ग प्रशस्त किया था। वेद ज्ञान के अथाह भंडार हैं। इनमें ज्ञान और विज्ञान की सभी विधाओं का सूत्ररूप में उल्लेख है। अतएव मनु का कथन है कि ” सर्वज्ञानमयो हि स:”(मनु. २.७ ) । आचार्य यास्क का यह कथन अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण है कि “न ह्येषु प्रत्यक्षमस्ति अनृषेरतपसो वा “(निरुक्त १३.१२) अर्थात् जो ऋषि या तपस्वी नहीं है, उसको मंत्रों के गूढ अर्थ का ज्ञान नहीं हो सकता है। सबसे अधिक गूढ अर्थ वाले देवता-वाचक शब्द हैं। जैसे- अग्नि, इन्र्द,मरुति,अश्विनौ, सोम, मित्र, वरुण ,आदि। इन पर जितना गहन चिंतन किया जाता है, उतना ही रहस्यात्मक अर्थ स्पष्ट होता है। वेद ज्ञान-महोदधि में आप जितनी गहराई में जायेंगे, उतने ही बहुमूल्य रत्न आपको प्राप्त होंगे। एक ही अग्नि शब्द सामान्य अग्नि से लेकर विद्युत्, सूर्य, जीवात्मा, परमात्मा, सौर ऊर्जा, नाभिकीय ऊर्जा, भूगर्भीय ऊर्जा आदि का बोधक है। प्रकरण के अनुसार वह अर्थ लिया जाएगा। वैदिक साहित्य में वैदिक संहिताओं, ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों आरण्यकों, उपनिषदों और ६ वदांगों का विस्तृत विवेचन किया गया है।
